Some more autumn tips and what to wear
On the back of my blog on autumn family sessions, I had some outdoor sessions in local parks in Dublin. They were great fun and I met some amazing families. Every group was different, from babies to wobblers/toddlers and older again. But they all asked the same question ‘what will we wear?’. I get asked that a lot! So the general guidelines still apply for what to wear outdoors as would be the case for a profession photo shoot indoors
Here are a couple of guides to help you pick a comfortable outfit for everyone
Timeless
Chinos, beige and blues, nature-hues, pastels, shirts, and simple dresses. Denim jeans and dresses also work
Florals and Patterns
Just florals, or an eclectic mix of prints and patterns. Pairing them with stripes can also work sometimes.
Colours
Keep them complementary as opposed to completely matching. Complementary colors are more like warm tones (yellows, oranges, pinks, warm red and even warm greens) together and cool tones (blues, purples, greens) together.
Consistency
Avoid extreme differences (e.g. one person is wearing a casual knitted chunky sweater and the other is wearing a nice silky dress). It can be quite jarring and look odd.
To summarise
- Whatever you feel comfortable in
- Try to avoid logos etc (but this is not always possible as some kids love football gear etc)
- Have everyone on the same page, for example if you are going for a relaxed look, make sure everyone is. So that there isn’t one person overdressed (or underdressed for that matter).
- Match or coordinate? This is a matter of taste and they both work. However, if you are coordinating, it is good to pick a couple of key colours (3) that everyone wears 1-2 of, along with neutral colours like denim, white, beige. For example navy, beige, brown, pink and blue.
- It is worth keeping in mind where you are going to take the photos. At this time of year, the backdrop is going to have browns, reds, yellows, greens and If you can pick up any of those colours it can look really well. A pop of yellow looks great in this light with the autumnal background.
- Ultimately, wear what you like and what you feel comfortable in. You will feel better in clothes that you like and your images will reflect that.
The attached image is from a session I did 2 weeks ago, the boy’s clothes ticked a lot of the above guidelines, comfortable, coordinating outfits, that looked well against the background (the red and yellow trousers looked great against the autumnal colours).
