Top Tips Older Children

16th March 2021 by Avril O'Kennedy

Top tips for older children

Well done, you have convinced everyone in the house to take part in a photography session. Which they will enjoy, they just don’t know it yet. And you will cherish.

Small babies come with their challenges, but older children come with a different set of challenges. So I have outlined some of my top tips for your photography session with older children to help the session run smoothly.

Awake

I will always do my best to work around your time table, so if there are naps to be had, I will organise the session around that. I find as a rule of thumb, younger children are best in the morning. If your children are older than an afternoon session might work better. Always go by the youngest in the house. The boss! If they still have naps, we can work around them.

Fed

Like with new babies, no one is happy when they are hungry. With that in mind please make sure everyone is fed before the session. I would advise not to bring out food during the session where possible. With small babies this is not possible, but with older children it is. Food, slows down and distracts from the session. Children can get upset about it and that does not result in good images!

Dressed

If you have questions about what clothes to wear, email me or call me before the session. It is much easier to sort that out then. That way when I arrive everyone is dressed and ready to have some fun and get some gorgeous family images.

Promise

If you have a promise made for after the session, I would ask you not to mention it during the session. To soon the session becomes all about the promise and it slows down the session.

Fun

I love fun filled sessions. I like the children to feel that they have been part of it and have enjoyed it. So don’t be afraid to have a bit of fun. Tickling, jumping, playing, reading, running, telling jokes and stories all help in producing natural relaxed images.

I hope I have covered everything here, but if you have any further questions regarding photography sessions with older children, please do not hesitate in contacting me.
